From the Forum: Soil Blocking, Top Five, & Tarping Cover Crops

Per our new tradition (new tradition?), we’re rounding up some of the interesting conversations in the Growers Community each week.

First, I have to say it was a fun week. For one, I really appreciate everyone’s attitude. Our contributors are extremely knowledgeable and willing to share their insight without pretension. And that rocks. So big thanks as always to everyone who takes the time to respond.

I started a thread about soil-blocking because I still have an affinity for this ridiculously labor intensive practice and I explain why, but also hear from several people who just do not dig them. At all.

Farmwithkeith asked a question that I both 1) cheated at when answering myself, but also 2) did not feel got the engagement it deserved—What in your opinion are the Top 5 pieces of equipment/infrastructure you purchased, or you wish you had purchased in your first year? It takes only a minute and could be extremely valuable for growers just getting started. Go add your thoughts. Let’s take it one step further, what did you feel you needed, and bought/built, that was completely wrong? What’s your strategy for making new capital investments in the farm?

Our buddies at Browntown Homestead asked about tarping over a cover crop that has not been crimped which is a great question. It’s very tempting. For more on integrating cover cropping into no-till veg systems, check out episode one of the podcast with Frith Farm. Just brilliant.
